When the Dream Becomes Heavy

A book for early childhood owners and leaders who are ready to move from crisis mode to clarity in action.

You opened, built, or stepped into early childhood leadership with a vision.

A vision to serve children well.
A vision to support families.
A vision to build a strong team.
A vision to create a quality childcare program where excellence is visible every day.

But somewhere along the way, the weight became real.

Staff call-outs.
Licensing requirements.
Enrollment concerns.
Parent communication.
Team culture.
Classroom consistency.
Operational bottlenecks.
The constant pressure of being the person everyone looks to for answers.

What was once a dream can start to feel like a burden when you are trying to carry it without enough structure, systems, or support.

This book is being written for the early childhood leader who knows their program was meant to be more than a daily cycle of fires, fixes, and frustration.

It is for the leader who still believes excellence is possible, but needs a clearer path back to it.

About the Book

The ECE PIVOT™ book will help early childhood owners, directors, assistant directors, and emerging leaders identify where their program may be operating in crisis mode and begin building toward excellence with clarity, structure, systems, and sustainable leadership.

This book is not being written from theory.

It is being written from more than 30 years of experience in early childhood education. From the classroom to the director’s office, from coaching and training to multi-site leadership, from building programs to supporting leaders through the real pressures of this work.

Inside, readers will be invited to pause, reflect, assess, and begin their own PIVOT.

Not just to survive the role.

But to return to the vision, strengthen the systems, support the people, and build a program where children thrive, families feel confident, teachers feel supported, and leaders are equipped to lead with intention.

This Book Is for You If:

You are tired of leading from reaction.
You feel like the dream has become heavier than you expected.
You are carrying staffing, enrollment, licensing, operations, and culture all at once.
You know your program has bottlenecks you can no longer ignore.
You want to create a quality childcare business, center, team, and culture.
You need practical guidance, not just encouragement.
You are ready to move from crisis mode to clarity in action.
You want to build excellence that can actually be sustained.

  • Why excellent programs require supported leaders
  • How to move from carrying the program to truly leading it

The Heart of the Book

This book is about more than fixing problems.

It is about helping leaders remember what they were building before the pressure became loud.

It is about naming the weight of the work without letting the weight become the whole story.

It is about helping early childhood leaders come back to excellence. Not as a slogan, but as a way of leading, building, deciding, supporting, and sustaining.

Because the dream does not have to stay buried under the daily pressure.

There is a way back to clarity.
There is a way back to intention.
There is a way back to excellence.

That way is the PIVOT.

A Note From DeEtte

I am writing this book for the leaders who love early childhood education deeply but are tired from carrying so much of it alone.

I am writing it for the owner who had a dream, the director who is trying to hold everything together, the assistant director who is growing into leadership, and the emerging leader who knows they are called to this work but wants to lead differently.

I know the weight of this work.

I also know excellence is still possible.

This book is my invitation to come back to the vision, name what is not working, build what is missing, and begin your next PIVOT.

I am honored to walk beside the leaders who are building what children, families, and teachers deserve.

Rooted in excellence,
DeEtte M. Thomas
